What is Zakat al-Fitr (Fitrah)?

Zakat al-fitr (fitrah) is a form of charity given as an expression of gratitude for being created and for fasting in Ramadan and reaching Eid; it is given to specific eligible persons.

Who gives Zakat al-Fitr (Fitrah)?

Those who reach Eid al-Fitr, can meet their basic needs, and—after excluding their annual debts—possess wealth at or above the nisab threshold (80.18 g of gold or its equivalent value) may give zakat al-fitr.
For zakat al-fitr, it is not required that a full year has passed over the nisab amount.

How much is Zakat al-Fitr in 2026?

The zakat al-fitr (fitrah) amount is announced each year by the Diyanet. For 2026, the daily zakat al-fitr amount is ₺240. (Diyanet İşleri Başkanlığı)

Who can receive Zakat al-Fitr (Fitrah)?

Zakat al-fitr may be given to:
 

  • Poor Muslims who are not under one’s financial responsibility,
  • People in poverty and hardship who cannot meet their basic needs,
  • Relatives such as siblings, aunts/uncles (maternal/paternal), and their children, in-laws (daughter/son-in-law), and parents-in-law—if they are not well-off,
  • People in debt whose remaining wealth falls below the nisab after their debts are deducted.

Who cannot receive Zakat al-Fitr (Fitrah)?

It is not permissible to give zakat al-fitr to:
  • Those who are already in a position to give zakat,
  • First-degree relatives (mother, father, grandparents, children, grandchildren, etc.),
  • One’s spouse (husband and wife cannot give it to each other).

Can Zakat al-Fitr be donated to charities? Is it religiously permissible?

There is no religious objection to giving zakat al-fitr to trusted associations, foundations, institutions, or solidarity funds that are known to collect zakat, fidyah, and fitrah and distribute them only to the eligible categories stated in Surah At-Tawbah, verse 60, managed by reliable persons.

When is Zakat al-Fitr given?

Zakat al-fitr can be given up to the first day of Eid al-Fitr, and there is no objection to giving it before Eid.
