Costs of the water wells vary depending on the country, geographical conditions of the country and fluctuations in foreign exchange rates, and are opened in certain periods in the countries which need water well.
Our water wells are opened not in the form of forced pump but water facility. We are opening high quality and long-living water wells which have the properties such as elevated water tank, solar system or electric-driven water pump, treatment, multi-faucets, etc. Also, deep-drilling is used, reaching up to the main spring to make our water wells have a longer lifetime. This requires higher levels of drilling efforts, eventually leading to higher costs..
Depending on the population of the community, and specifications of the well, 2,000-7,000 people can benefit from water well. And watering troughs are provided to enable animals benefit from the water depending on the requirements of the region. Thus, death of animals depending on the lack of water are avoided, especially during dry seasons, as a result, supporting the community using animals as a mean of their livelihoods to not suffer from economic loss.
Our water wells are opened on the basis of the need, and have been opened in the Chad, Somali, Uganda, Niger, and Senegal, defined as the region in need, so far.
The countries and regions in which water well will be opened are determined after initial screening of the requests submitted by our International Missions, Turkish Embassies, Red Crescent Delegation Offices, national societies, and the requests of national administrations submitted to our Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
After the initial screening, a needs assessment and field surveys are conducted for the regions in need of water well, upon which water well projects are developed.
Besides request and need assessment, Turkish Red Crescent must assess its organizational capability, and finalize the internal procedures and permit process in order to bring the project into life.
The water well projects we implemented with your donations are the fully-fledged projects, ready for construction.
In many countries of Africa, it is very common that people from different religions, sects can co-live harmoniously and peacefully. The main criteria for opening a water well is the need of local community for water and alleviate the human suffering. Once these criteria met, local community continues living in all its natural course within a co-habitation culture involving people from different religions, languages and races.
It takes 45-60 days to open a water well as long as a force majeure event (such as warfare, civil war, disaster etc. events) does not occur.
Keeping under control and ensuring sustainability of the wells, once opened, is under responsibility of Turkish Red Crescent. A 10 years and over of lifetime is estimated provided that necessary control, monitoring of materials are in place and no force majeure events occurs.
The projected budget of water well does not include expenses of donor for his/her participation in a well opening. Our donors who want to participate in the official opening of a constructed well may join in the opening in coordination with Turkish Red Crescent Team, if they pay their own expenses (flight, hotel, food and beverage, etc.) out of their pockets. However, due to pandemic, we do not recommend you to do so until the disappearance of the pandemic.
If our donors meet all or at least 70% of the water well costs, then the water well will be opened in their names. Also, if our donors meet at least 10% of water well costs, names of our donors are inscribed on one commemorative stone along with other donors.
You can examples of both below:
A water well is controlled in yearly periods. Also, in case of any problem that may prevent functioning of the water well, it is responded immediately.
The water from each well undergoes a water analysis. If it is detrimental for human health, then drilling terminated, and a new water well is opened in another location.
While making your donation, if you provide us your contact details, a confirmation SMS and e-mail for that your donation has been received are sent to you. If you purchased a right to name inscription, or the water will be opened in your name, we keep you informed when drilling commences and progress status of the water well construction in the meantime.
When you make a donation to any project of Turkish Red Crescent and request a receipt, receipts are delivered to you by mail or cargo. Also, bank slip you received for the donations you made via bank constitutes a receipt.
Since we make efforts for opening water wells in the shortest time possible, it is not possible have water wells opened by installment payments.
All cash donations to Red Crescent can be recognized as an expense and is deductible from the tax.
A protocol can be entered into at their requests if our donors meet all or at least 70% of cost of water well.
Materials that are locally available are preferred as the delivery of the in-kind materials to the relevant country poses different procedures and logistics issues.
